At Unique Pet Care we believe that transparency is the best policy. Our commitment to providing effective and responsible products has inspired us to continually improve our formulas over the years, leading to numerous updates to our products and formulas as new technologies emerge.
After countless conversations about the best way to build products that get the job done in a responsible way, we’ve decided that the best way to help consumers feel confident about the products they use is to put the power in their hands.
We developed our Formulated With Trust program with you in mind.
In the section below, we will discuss our promise to you to always be straightforward and transparent about what our products contain, including a full ingredients list and some of the reasons we chose those ingredients.
Disclaimer: Ingredient disclosures are to the best of our knowledge based upon information provided by our raw material suppliers.
At Unique Pet Care, we have always been committed to providing our customers with exceptional products that are developed to work more effectively than previous generations of cleaners and treatments. We choose the ingredients for our products with the utmost care and research so you can trust the superiority of our products. More and more conscious consumers are educating themselves on the products they bring into their homes, and having accurate and detailed information is critical to easily select the right products for them.
In light of this, we believe that using ill-defined terms like “safe,” “non-toxic,” and “eco-friendly” without detailed information to back such claims is irresponsible and leaves consumers confused about how safe or natural a product really is. So, instead of relying on vague buzzwords, we have decided to provide you with a full list of our ingredients and insight into why we chose to use them in our formulas
This is what we mean when we say our products are Formulated With Trust.
It is our goal to provide you with complete transparency into our ingredients so you can make an informed decision as to whether or not our products meet your standard. We believe that when responsible companies operate with bold honesty about their products, the consumer can have confidence in their decision to use those products in their homes.
Below, we list each of the ingredients we use and in which products they appear. We also provide some reasons why we chose each particular ingredient. By providing this detailed information, we offer you the transparency necessary to make an informed decision about what you bring into your home and the confidence that our products will live up to your standards for safety and environmental responsibility.
If our products don’t quite make the cut for your home, we are still thankful for the opportunity to share our products and ingredients with you, and we appreciate the time you took to learn about Unique Camping + Marine.
Cleaning agent/Surfactant
Ethoxylated alcohols are non-ionic synthetic detergents/surfactants; surfactants or surface acting agents reduce the surface tension or the strength of bonded water molecules at the surface, allowing the water to penetrate substances better. On the molecular level, a surfactant can both bond to water and to those things water doesn’t, like oil. With enough surfactant, you can make water and oil fully mix when otherwise they would stay separated. We use ethoxylated alcohols in some of our products because of their cleaning abilities. We like the fact that in the HERA assessment of cleaning products in the European Union, they were shown to be of little environmental concern and that this group of cleaners “does not cause concern with regard to consumer use.” This class of surfactants is very common in household cleaners.
HERA stands for the Health and Environmental Risk Assessment program at the EPA, which is focused on achieving greater understanding of how key biological, chemical, and physical processes that contribute to human health are affected by exposure to pollutants.

Surfactant
We use this surfactant blend to create the slow-dissolve nature of the puck. It's made from the fatty acids in coconut oil and is frequently used in cosmetic products. Coco amides are what give the puck its texture and physical shape. The International Journal of Toxicology listed it as " Safe as used in rinse-off products; safe at concentrations up to 10% in leave-on products."

Digestion/breakdown agent
The bacteria we use are Class 1 Non-Pathogenic, soil-borne, bacillus bacteria, and we choose specific bacteria strains that best break down the problem (stains, odors, solid waste, buildup from fats, oils and grease, etc.). Bacteria produce their own enzymes to break down organic matter into consumable pieces, and then the bacteria consume those components and the enzymes. The bacteria we use:

Stabilizes Bacteria
The buffering agents (or simply buffers) in our product help keep the solution chemically neutral. Bacteria perform best at neutral pH and buffers are used to keep the pH in this preferred range. These work together with the preservatives to keep the bacteria supported and ready to work. The buffers used are considered trade secret by the supplier we receive them from.

Thickener
We chose this because it is an effective thickener that (according to the manufacturer) is “suited for all types of personal care formulations, including those for baby care, and for sensitive skin.” By thickening the product, the cleaning solution more easily sticks to the walls of the toilet bowl so it can coat and penetrate all the surfaces you want to clean.

Cleaning agent
Citric Acid is an amazing cleaning agent and it is what gives lemons and limes their tart taste. We chose citric acid because of its overall ease of use, its reactive ability when paired with other powdered substances, and its safety profile. Citric acid and sodium bicarbonate are mixed in powdered form for use in our toilet cleaning bomb, and when they get wet together, they create a foaming reaction (like the science fair volcano). Citric acid also has some great cleaning properties on its own, including the ability to descale hard water stains.

Fragrance
These are the DFE fragrance scents we use:
We chose these fragrances because we love the fact that they are designed for the environment and they are from a fragrance supplier we have had a long relationship with.
Contributes to visual aesthetic
Ecryll 11 is a component commonly found in floor polish and other products, and we have used it to make our ready-to-use formulas opaque and white. Customers have historically preferred a white cleaner, but in light of our commitment for continued product development and improvement, we will be phasing this component out of our ready-to-use formulas. We have made this decision because this component does nothing to improve overall product effectiveness, and in its undiluted form, it can cause mild irritation. When diluted, we have never had issues of any sort, but in an effort to always be improving, we will be moving away from it.

Breakdown agent
Extracellular just means outside of cells. Enzymes are specially shaped proteins that help break down or build specific chemical bonds. Bacteria naturally make their own enzymes to help break down waste but we also add specific types of enzymes to certain products to increase the breakdown effectiveness.

Breakdown booster
Extracellular amylase specifically targets and breaks down starches into smaller carbohydrates, which aids in the rapid breakdown of clogs and solid waste in drain and wastewater applications. Enzymes trapped by water (not able to travel by air) pose little to no concern for the health of humans or the environment, which is why we deliver them in products in such a way that they could not be released into the air.
Breakdown booster
We use extracellular cellulase enzymes in some of our products to break down toilet paper and to aid in the rapid digestion of solid waste. Enzymes act faster than bacteria because bacteria need to first create enzymes that then go to work; they are also capable of working in environments where bacteria could not survive. Cellulases break down cellulose, which is the major building block of paper and is also a major component in solid waste. Enzymes trapped by water (not able to travel by air) pose little to no concern for the health of humans or the environment, which is why we deliver them in products in such a way that they could not be released into the air.
Breakdown booster
We use extracellular lipase enzymes to breakdown fats, oils, and grease in some of our drain and wastewater products. These specific types of enzymes greatly increase the effective breakdown of fat, oil, and grease buildup, which are the primary components of drain clogs, wastewater treatment buildups in RV holding tanks and septic tanks, and sensor level issues. This ingredient is extremely important to product effectiveness and how fast it works. Enzymes trapped by water (not able to travel by air) pose little to no concern for the health of humans or the environment, which is why we deliver them in products in such a way that they could not be released into the air.
Breakdown booster
We use extracellular protease enzymes in some wastewater products to aid in rapid clog and solid waste degradation, which speeds up the effectiveness of wastewater and plumbing products. Enzymes trapped by water (not able to travel by air) pose little to no concern for the health of humans or the environment, which is why we deliver them in products in such a way that they could not be released into the air.

Dye
The version we use is basically food dye with a few other components, and we chose this because of the appealing blue color, the fact that the manufacturer is local, and the overall compatibility with our products. While the color is not critical to the effectiveness of the cleaner, it helps you see where the product has been applied.

Enzyme stabilizer
Glycerin (also called glycerol) is a syrupy, clear liquid that we use as an enzyme stabilizer. Enzymes take on a particular shape that allows them to easily break down organic matter, but many different external forces can negatively influence their shape which will also end the enzymes’ ability to work properly. Glycerin basically helps to extend the shelf life of enzymes within our products. Similar to propylene glycol, we chose it because of its ability to rapidly degrade in the environment and it also sits on the FDA Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) list.

Preservative
This preservative is used in conjunction with Proxel GXL to keep our bacteria in spore-form while in the bottle and prevent them from being spoiled by outside microbes. This product is antimicrobial but does not interfere with the enzymes in the bottle, allowing them to work immediately upon application while the bacteria activate. When the product is further diluted (used normally as per our instructions), the bacteria are able to activate and clean as desired.

Makes The Product Opaque
Opacifiers are used to make a liquid product opaque. This ingredient is in our odor and stain concentrates because it gives consumers a more aesthetically pleasing experience when mixing the concentrate with water. Informed consumers will know that the “dirtiness” of the liquid is actually the bacteria and thus the functional cleaning portion of the liquid. However, to wider, less-informed audiences, this brownish appearance might be off-putting. Because of this, we add the opacifier.

Cleaning agent/Surfactant
PC-48 is a surfactant (surface acting agent), meaning it reduces the surface tension or the strength of bonded water molecules at the surface, allowing the water to penetrate substances better. On the molecular level, a surfactant can both bond to water and to those things water doesn’t, like oil. With enough surfactant, you can make water and oil fully mix when otherwise they would stay separated. Some surfactants are highly toxic and terrible for the environment while others are less so. We specifically selected a surfactant that is used in the personal care industry and has a good profile for being biodegradable. PC-48 is the primary surfactant in our products because it helps penetrate stains, odors, oils, greases, etc. It helps our main active ingredients get the job done faster and better. Surfactants in general are harsh on aquatic life if they don’t break down quickly enough, which is why we chose PC-48: for its rapid and comprehensive breakdown capabilities within the environment.

Stabilizes Bacteria
The preservatives in our products are added to keep the bacteria alive and in their spore form. The use of preservatives works two-fold. The first purpose is to keep outside microorganisms out of the liquid. Foreign bacteria, mold spores et cetera love having the opportunity to grow in a liquid product. We don’t want this for obvious reasons. The other, less obvious purpose of the preservative is to keep the bacteria in spore form. Bacteria go into spore form when they are in less than hospitable environments. Spore form helps bacteria survive for extended periods of time with no food, which is ideal for bottling them to be used later. Bacteria are typically put into spore form through flash heating. However, to keep them in spore form we need to maintain an inhospitable environment in the bottle. This is achieved through preservatives. You will not see preservatives in our powdered products because the bacteria find being dry inhospitable and thus remain in spore form. These two preservatives are considered trade secret by the supplier we get them from.

Bacteria and enzyme stabilizer
Propylene glycol is widely used in the food manufacturing industry, cosmetics industry, and many others. It can help with water absorption, bacteria and enzyme preservation, and much more. We chose propylene glycol to stabilize some of our formulas because of its ability to break down in the environment and it is on the FDA’s Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) list.
It’s true that propylene glycol is found in antifreeze, but this is not the antifreeze ingredient that makes people wary (that would be ethylene glycol). Propylene glycol is metabolized by the body and is even listed on the FDA GRAS list as a source of carbohydrates.

Preservative
Proxel GXL is an antimicrobial preservative. We utilize this and another preservative called Kathon CF/ICP to keep our bacteria in spore-form while in the bottle and prevent them from being spoiled by outside microbes. By creating a mildly antibacterial environment, the bacteria are prevented from becoming active and spoiling. This product is antimicrobial but does not interfere with the enzymes in the bottle, allowing them to work immediately upon application while the bacteria activate. When the product is further diluted (used normally as per our instructions), the bacteria are able to activate and clean as desired. We like Proxel GXL because it is listed in the CleanGredients database of chemical ingredients that have been pre-approved by the U.S. EPA to meet the Safer Choice Standard.

Carrier mineral
We use salt as a carrier for our powdered products because it is very effective at giving our bacteria a ride. Salt is also fairly inexpensive, allowing us to focus costs on the premium ingredients, such as our high-quality bacteria blends.
We typically use one of two types of salt:
Enough salt will kill bacteria, and that’s why salt has been used as a preservative for millennia. However, the volume of salt we use in our powder-based products will not negatively affect the bacteria.

Cleaning agent
Sodium bicarbonate is generally known as baking soda. Most people think of baking soda as just a primary ingredient in baking recipes, but it also has outstanding cleaning properties. We chose to include it in our formulations because of its fundamental cleaning properties and its ability to react with certain other ingredients, namely citric acid, which creates a desired foaming reaction. Sodium bicarbonate is on the FDA’s Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) list.

pH balancer
Sodium carbonate is also known as soda ash. The thickener we use in our toilet bowl cleaner has a pH that is lower than ideal for our bacterial blend, so we use this white powder to bring the pH of the product back to neutral. We chose sodium carbonate because of its efficiency as well as its availability (widely used in swimming pool maintenance). Soda ash can cause minor skin irritation at full strength, but in the amounts we use, it is highly unlikely to cause irritation. Sodium carbonate is also featured on the FDA’s Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) list.

Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSa) is a surfactant (surface acting agent), meaning it reduces the surface tension or the strength of bonded water molecules at the surface, allowing the water to penetrate substances better. On the molecular level, a surfactant can both bond to water and to those things water doesn’t, like oil. With enough surfactant, you can make water and oil fully mix when otherwise they would stay separated. Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate (SLSa) has strong cleaning properties with great foaming action and is stable. This should not be confused with Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) which has long been a commonly used but widely undesirable ingredient in the cosmetic world because of its ability to penetrate and clean skin, but also cause drying and irritation. SLSa retains all the cleansing power but none of the drying or irritation features, which is why we used it in some of our powdered products. Surfactants in general are harsh on aquatic life if they don’t break down quickly enough, which is why we chose SLSa: for its rapid and comprehensive breakdown capabilities within the environment.

Liquid Solvent
Water is vital for all life on earth and especially for the effectiveness of our liquid products. It’s often referred to as the universal solvent because of it’s amazing ability to dissolve more substances than any other liquid. It’s able to do this because its elemental makeup causes molecules in other substances to pull away from one another, hence the substance is dissolved. We use water to dilute our active ingredients from highly concentrated, less effective levels to more usable levels. Technically water can be considered toxic because consumption of too much water can cause damage to the human body.
