Our founder, Don Stewart, was in the janitorial supply business in the 1980’s. At that time apartment complexes would totally rip out the carpet in a rental unit if the renter had pets, due to the messes that a pet can create, even if the renter had only been there a few months. Don thought this process wreaked havoc on the environment due to the amount of waste created by ripping out carpets, pads, etc., so he put his knowledge about the cleaning industry to good use toward finding a solution to this waste problem. He remembered that certain organizations around the world were starting to use a brand-new cleaning technology involving bacteria to remove the damage created by oil spills plaguing the world’s oceans. So, he reached out to a few of these organizations to learn more about this bacterial process they were using. Through these conversations he learned that bacteria are a natural solution for cleaning up these oceanic oil disasters. He thought if these organizations can use bacteria to clean up massive oil spills, why couldn’t it work on apartment complex carpets destroyed by pets’ odors and stains.
He immediately went to work creating a product that effectively eliminated the odors and stains in these apartment carpets, preventing the apartment complex owners from having to scrap any carpet whatsoever. Thus, Unique Pet Odor and Stain Eliminator was born. The success of Pet Odor and Stain Eliminator forced Don to expand the company rapidly, bringing on more people to spread the news about cleaning carpets and surfaces in a safer and effective way.
During this time, Don also began to learn more about how well bacteria-based products work to solve a variety of problems that people face, not just apartment complexes. Fast forward to today, where we now have three generations of Stewarts working at Unique and sharing our great products with as many people as we can, striving to help solve their problems in a more effective way.
